"Not Even Lions"

“What are you thinking? I’m thinking that we should stick together. I’m thinking that we should follow our hearts. Let’s stick together. Let’s follow our hearts. Not even lions can tear us apart.” The Features

The most recent time I saw The Features in concert, I began to listen carefully to the lyrics of this song. I’m probably the only person who goes to a rock show and ends up outlining in her head, but that’s exactly what I did. I started thinking about the “lions” that tried to tear me apart from my husband. But, as “way leads on to way” (Frost l. 14), my mind quickly began making a list of the “lions” that keep me apart from God. This is what I came up with:
  • failure
  • discontentment
  • anger (with events and outcomes)
  • excuses
  • time (or my lack-there-of, being as important as I am)
  • desire (to do other than His way)
  • unanswered (or “wrongly” answered) prayers
  • lows (as opposed to spiritual highs)
  • procrastination
  • other things and people (who get all of my passion)
  • things (to get)
  • goals (to met)
  • misunderstanding of who God really is

I listed thirteen predators trying to “tear” me apart from my Creator. As torpid as some of them might seem, there is nothing inactive about being inactive in my faith. These reasons are unrelenting, and ignoring the danger (Oh, is that number #14 on the list?) won’t keep me safe.

If you knew actual lions were lurking all around you, how would you arm yourself?

I would march against them in battle; I would set them all on fire” (Isaiah 27:4).

Before you can defend yourself, the first step is to acknowledge the lions in your life.

What’s on your list?

Listen to "Lions" here.
Note in the video: even after he is "devoured" by the lion, the man still fights back. Sometimes the lions in our life will conquer us, but it is never an excuse to give up.
